When I first heard that stones could have healing (metaphysical) properties, I was not sure what to think. As I researched, I found that a lot of the properties are due to the color of the stone. The chemical compounds that make up the stone are also considered. There are even legends surrounding many stones, dating back many years. I will begin sharing the information I have gathered in future posts. Regardless of what any of us believe, the information is interesting.
I am going to start with the birthstones because these are the more common stones. There are several different varieties of birthstones. I will list the traditional first and if there are others I will put those in parenthesis. Here is a list of the months and the stones associated with them:
January – Garnet
February – Amethyst
March – Aquamarine or Bloodstone (Modern Birthstone – Jasper)
April – Diamond or Pearl
May – Emerald or Agate
June – Alexandrite or Pearl (Modern Birthstones – Moonstone)
July – Ruby or Black Onyx
August – Carnelian or Peridot
September – Blue Sapphire or Lapis Lazuli
October – Pink Tourmaline or Opal
November – Citrine or Golden Topaz
December – Turquoise or Zircon or Blue Tourmaline
These stones are also broken into cabochon (smooth, more natural) or faceted (cut stones) categories and that is way some of these differ from what we have seen in charts at jewelry stores or stands.
My next posts will start describing the metaphysical (healing) properties of these stones. I will also mix in history and legends as I go.
Enjoy!
